The HP EliteBook 840 G11 is a mainstream business laptop. Its USB-C ports determine which docks give full capability, and HP’s own docks are designed around its power and management features. This guide explains what to look for.
Based on manufacturer specifications and published documentation. We have not hands-on tested these products. Check HP’s QuickSpecs for your exact configuration.
Business EliteBooks of this generation typically include Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports that carry data, video and power in one cable. If that is the case on your unit, you can use a Thunderbolt dock with full capability, and you also gain flexibility to use a USB-C dock.

| HP Thunderbolt dock family (e.g. Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4) | Thunderbolt | Two 4K displays, heavy peripherals | Designed for HP business laptops |
| HP USB-C dock family (e.g. USB-C/A Universal Dock, USB-C Dock G5) | USB-C DP Alt Mode | One or two monitors, lower cost | Dual display depends on dock design |

HP business laptops commonly ship with a 65 W adapter, with some configurations using more. Choose a dock whose Power Delivery output is at least as high as your original adapter. HP docks also support features such as pass-through of the laptop’s identity for management tools; check the dock datasheet if your IT department uses this.
Use the cable that came with the dock. A random USB-C cable may carry power but not video or high speed, and this is a frequent cause of a dock that charges but shows no picture.

Does the EliteBook 840 G11 work with older HP docks? Possibly, but confirm in HP’s compatibility list. Older docks may not offer full features.
Do I need an HP-branded dock? No. HP docks fit well with HP management tools, but third-party docks work for most users.
Can I charge through any USB-C port? Many laptops charge only through certain ports or at limited wattage on some. Use the port marked for charging and check your manual.
Why is my dock slow to wake from sleep? Update BIOS, Thunderbolt driver and dock firmware; these often resolve wake issues.
What about the older 840 G8? Same logic applies: read your port icons, and see the Thunderbolt versus USB-C guide. Some G8 units differ in port capability.
Verify the Thunderbolt 4 ports on your configuration, match the dock’s wattage to your charger, and choose a Thunderbolt dock for two 4K monitors or a USB-C dock for simpler desks. Related: best dock for a laptop and two monitors.
